Located in Cheboygan, Michigan, Mulligan’s is a landmark in food and entertainment in one
of the most beautiful places in the Great Lakes. Cheboygan itself marks spot on the map
where the Great Inland Waterway meets the Strait of Mackinac. Four seasons of outdoor fun
abound here. Cheboygan and the entire region truly is the “Land of Lakes and Trails.”
Of course, those who play golf and most other folks know the term to mean, essentially, a
“do-over” where a golfer tees up another ball on the first tee when he or she doesn’t like
the first one… with no penalty incurred. But who was Mulligan anyway?
Well, Mulligan is one young Mr. David Mulligan, a member of St. Vincent Golf Club in Montreal who in the 1920’s was known to be in the habit of dropping another ball whenever he made a shot not to his liking. He never noted the extra shot on his scorecard, and because his family was influential in the city no one ever called him on his bad behavior. They did, however, whisper about it to others. They told their friends at other clubs and the word spread. Eventually, by the mid-1930’s it became known as a Mulligan whenever a player took another shot without noting the true consequences. Nowadays, it’s common practice but only on the first tee and only once!
At Mulligan’s restaurant in Cheboygan, we believe Mr. Mulligan did a pretty big favor for all of us… so we named our restaurant after him. Hey, everybody gets a do-over once in a while.
